Pinewood Derby

PACK 777
PINEWOOD DERBY

Rules | Procedures

Pack 777 Derby Day:  RACE PROCEDURES

There will be 3 race “Phases” on Derby Day, each lasting approx 1 hour.

  1. Time Trials:  (10:30 – 11:30 pm)
Every scout will complete 4 races (one in each lane) against random opponents.  The fastest cars (based on time) will be eligible for the semi-finals.

  2. Rank Races: (11:30 – 1:00 pm)
Each rank (Tigers, Wolves, Bears, Webelos) will race among themselves.
Each car will race 4 times (once in each lane, against ~ every other cub in their rank).
Points will be given (1pt,2pt,3pt,4pt) for finish in each race (1st thru 4th place).
Trophies will be awarded for top 3 finishers in each rank.
            Webelos …. (  11:30 pm ) … 20min
            Bears ….…  (  11:50 pm ) … 20min
            Wolves .….  (  12:10 pm ) … 20 min
            Tigers ….… (  12:30 pm ) … 15min

Suggestion: Grab a bite from the Pit Stop Cafe while other ranks are racing. All race times are approximations.

  3. Semi-Finals/Finals:  (1:00 – 1:30 pm)
The 1st/2nd place winners from each rank (8 cars) PLUS the next 5 fastest cars from the time trials will race in semi-finals.

The semi-finalists will be narrowed down to 4 finalists who will race head-to-head for the Pack 777 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th place trophies.

  4. Awards Ceremony (1:30 – 2:00 pm)
Pack 777 finalist trophies PLUS the 6 “Best Of” Design Awards.

TIME TRIALS:

  • Each car will race 4 times (once in each lane).
  • Opponents will be randomly selected by computer software in the first round.
  • Remaining 3 rounds will be seeded such that faster cars only race other faster cars, and slower cars only race other slower cars.  This will keep the races close and exciting.
  • Opponent(s) is not really important as scoring is based on times.

Number of races:
Assuming 48 scouts we will need 48 races.

Scoring:
Finish times will be recorded for each car/each race.  Final scores will be sum of the 3 fastest races.  The fastest cars will be eligible to go onto the Semi-Finals.

Awards:
Ribbons will be awarded after each race 1st/2nd.  Cubs can stand in the designated “racers box” while their cars are racing.

RANK RACES:

In each of 4 ranks (Tiger, Wolf, Bear, Webelos) will determine the fastest 3 cars.
The top 2 will proceed to the Semi-Finals.

Number of races:
Each rank has approximately 13 scouts, so we need approx.13 races per rank.
This will allow every car to race in each lane, against approx. every other car.

Scoring:
Points will be given for place in each race (1st =1 pt, 2nd = 2 pt, 3rd = 3 pt, 4th = 4 pt). The car with least points wins.  Ties will be resolved based on common opponents and times (no tie breaker races).

The fastest 2 cars in each rank are eligible for the Semi-Finals.

Awards:
Trophies for that rank will be given out immediately after each rank race. The top 3 finishers get trophies.
