What is the National Junior Honor Society?
The National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) is the nation's premier organization established to recognize outstanding middle school students. Membership in the society carries the prestige and honor of belonging to a national organization, and members have the responsibility to strive for high academic performance, and maintain the highest standards for citizenship, service, leadership, and character. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since their beginnings in 1921 and 1929. The St. Joseph Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society dedicates itself to serve the school and the community.
Qualifications for Prospective Members:
Sixth and seventh graders may apply for membership. The selection of members to this chapter shall be determined on a point system derived on the evaluations collected from the faculty. The Faculty Council, consisting of five faculty members appointed by the principal, will gather information, average scores and vote on potential members. Candidates become members upon receiving a majority vote of the Faculty Council. 6th and 7th grade candidates eligible for membership must have a 93 Grade Point Average and maintain a G in conduct for the first three quarters of the school year, and exhibit the criteria of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, Citizenship and Character.
Membership Requirements:
•The students must maintain an average of 93 or above and maintain a G in conduct in all classes.
•Seventh and eighth graders must complete ten service hours related to NJHS in addition to their middle school service hours. (Some hours are after weekend Masses and after school.)
